Apple Sells Me Out To Spammers
As people who have followed the movements of Impossibly Stupid know, I dislike assholes in all their forms. For the form known as Spammers, I do many things to thwart their efforts. One thing I frequently do is give out unique email addresses to "untrusted" parties, just to verify how much they can be trusted.
So I woke up this morning to see a spam sent to the email I used to register for the Apple iTunes Affiliate Program. To be specific, it was the account set up with LinkShare, which Apple stopped using to manage their affiliate program towards the end of 2013.
Exactly how that email address got into the hands of videoplatform.net (the Rackspace-hosted spammer who sent the message) is unknown. Maybe a security breach. Maybe money changed hands.
Maybe Apple has contracts in place to slap LinkShare for this. Maybe nobody cares. All I know is that I can no longer trust Apple at this point, especially when it operates through third parties. I have a plan in place to deal with such abuse, of course, but Apple IDs are linked to email addresses, so it means an annoying amount of changes need to be done.
